| The dread of nuclear war, and concern for future generations prompted the invention of an antonym for military sites--Peace Sites. It occurred to Louis Kousin, who became the Peace Sites coordinator, that military sites dot the landscape, not only in our country, but also in a considerable part of the world. Why not dot the landscapes with Peace Sites?
The Peace Site can be a creative, positive way of establishing a physical presence, to consolidate and expand peace work.
Now, with the prospect of a national anti-ballistic missile system, unraveling a generation of bilateral and multilateral peace-keeping treaties and of nuclearization and weaponization of space, the prospect of both greatly enhanced in the emotional response to the horrific September 11 attack, it is time to rededicate existing peace sites and create new ones - to raise our consciousness and be a public presence as a force for non-violent conflict resolution and nuclear disarmament.
Their existence is visible proof of the intelligent response of people to the dangers of the militarization of our society. |
